AlexBeston Cold Calling. 1 Sep 22 2009, 6:08 PM EDT by AlexBeston

Hmm. suddenly realised this morning whilst washing the dishes (dunno the connection) that cold calling is akin to going up to someone in the street and saying “hey lets be friends!”. Why should they want to enter a relationship? Its the same with business relationships: there has to be some comfortable starting point that keeps the client in control. Its bad business practice to enter into a relationship with the first supplier who happens to turn up.
Looking at it from the clients point of view, a supplier is needed (we don’t do it in-house), there are many alternatives to choose from so the offerings have to be carefully weighed, but we wont spend too much time on it so we will choose from an assortment of those who are recommended and those found on a local search who look good on first glance. An email sent to each on the list and the best offer is chosen, but not the cheapest and certainly not the most expensive.
Cold calling can work but if I spend all day on Union St, they’d eventually be someone who’d say yes, but an awful large number who just wouldn’t.
Do you find this valuable?
